was heavily pregnant with our first child, my husband and I fell in love with an old coastguard station. In truth, it was just a very average, very rundown end of terrace house, but it had a tower, and that was the main attraction. A Tower with panoramic views of the sea from 3 Juliet balconies. What’s not to love about that? Over the years, this tower room has had many functions, it has been our bedroom, a home office, the spare room, the kids room and the au pairs room, not all at the same time! And now, I am lucky enough to have managed to get it as my studio! With the addition of running water, I was ready to go. Up here in my tower, surrounded by the sea, the wind and the sky I feel very close to the elements and have wonderful views of the sea. Naturally one would expect that I would paint the sea, but that’s not how I operate. I don’t paint what I see, I paint what I feel. And in this tower, I feel alive ! It is the most invigorating space in which to paint and the surrounding view and air fills me with the energy I need to explore an empty canvas. The Perfect Storm series started one night when I couldn’t sleep due to the noise of the thunder and lightening. Sleepy and in my pjs,I went in search of our dog Monty, as I had a feeling he might be unsettled. But I couldn’t find him, and after searching, I found him in my tower at the top of the house. He must have been really frightened to end up there as normally he isn’t allowed up stairs. So together with my dog I started the first of the Perfect Storm series. I didn’t finish that painting for weeks, it is, as all paintings in this series are, an accumulation of many layers and deconstructed layers of paint. It’s an intense process when I start to deconstruct layers of painting as I never know if I will create something amazing or if I will just simply destroy what I have already created. The hardest part of deconstructing a painting is knowing when to stop and truthfully, I just have to go with my gut feeling, I just know when it’s finished and I have to make sure I do actually stop when I get that feeling. Thankfully due to the ever changing and volatile Irish climate, I think this series will just grow and grow! It is the most invigorating space in which to paint and the surrounding view and air fills me with the energy I need to explore an empty canvas. The Perfect Storm series started one night when I couldn’t sleep due to the noise of the thunder and lightening. Sleepy and in my pjs,I went in search of our dog Monty, as I had a feeling he might be unsettled. But I couldn’t find him, and after searching, I found him in my tower at the top of the house. He must have been really frightened to end up there as normally he isn’t allowed up stairs. So together with my dog I started the first of the Perfect Storm series. I didn’t finish that painting for weeks, it is, as all paintings in this series are, an accumulation of many layers and deconstructed layers of paint. It’s an intense process when I start to deconstruct layers of painting as I never know if I will create something amazing or if I will just simply destroy what I have already created. The hardest part of deconstructing a painting is knowing when to stop and truthfully, I just have to go with my gut feeling, I just know when it’s finished and I have to make sure I do actually stop when I get that feeling. Having worked as an artist for over 20 years through conceptual photography, performance, writing and video, I had an overwhelming urge to paint, I can only describe this urge as a physical need which could not be ignored. When my children were small with a desire to be with them everyday, I resigned from my lecturing position in IADT and set up an art school for children in the kitchen of our home in Wicklow Town. Over a period of of years, this school grew and developed into a business, a business to which I could take my children everyday, initially as students and eventually as helpers! The urge to paint myself grew through teaching children to paint. I was so inspired by these little people and all their creative ideas and their instinctive creative intuition. It was always my aim to nurture this intuition in the children and try and keep their self-conscious selves at bay, I wanted them to paint how they wanted to paint and not let a teacher dictate to them otherwise. The symbiotic relationship I had with my students inspired me to eventually start painting myself, and I don’t mean just occasionally painting a landscape, what I needed to do was drop everything and delve into the physical energy of painting, indulge the urge to paint big canvases and explore the process of intuition which I had inspired to me by the children I taught. The Submerged series is a direct result of this exploration process into which I threw myself. I allowed this physical energy to paint, that had built up inside me, to explode and find itself on the canvas. Now, modern science is confirming that our actions, thoughts and feeling are indeed shaped not just by our genes and neurochemistry, history and relationships, but also by our surroundings.” Winifred Gallagher – The Power of Place Fragilities is a new series of work by Louise Cherry of staged portraits exploring the relationship between people and the urban environment. The backdrop is the harsh landscape of Dublin city: the rundown forgotten corners, the graceful columns of the past and the sparse, unforgiving newly developed spaces. For the portraits the artist has chosen to challenge traditional documentary photography in favour of staged images, using actors to reconstruct real situations, thus the photographs create fictional scenes, which at first glance seem real. The series came about as a result of the artist being confined to bed for over a year due to illness. When she stepped back out into the city once more, she was struck by how difficult and challenging a living space the city is and how hard it is for human beings to exist in this unnatural environment. This territory of controlled public spaces impacts on how people live and cope with their lives. Increasingly we need to look outward, not inward for insights into human behaviour. ‘Fragilities’ was shot with a large format camera and the final prints are 48” x 36” in size and presented in a 4” silver frame. nothing more than to paint during a good storm; wind, rain, thunder and lightening provide an extra layer of passion and energy to my canvas. 14 years ago when I was heavily pregnant with our first child, my husband and I fell in love with an old coastguard station. In truth, it was just a very average, very rundown end of terrace house, but it had a tower, and that was the main attraction. A Tower with panoramic views of the sea from 3 Juliet balconies. What’s not to love about that? Over the years, this tower room has had many functions, it has been our bedroom, a home office, the spare room, the kids room and the au pairs room, not all at the same time! And now, I am lucky enough to have managed to get it as my studio! With the addition of running water, I was ready to go. Up here in my tower, surrounded by the sea, the wind and the sky I feel very close to the elements and have wonderful views of the sea. Naturally one would expect that I would paint the sea, but that’s not how I operate. I don’t paint what I see, I paint what I feel. And in this tower, I feel alive ! It is the most invigorating space in which to paint and the surrounding view and air fills me with the energy I need to explore an empty canvas. The Perfect Storm series started one night when I couldn’t sleep due to the noise of the thunder and lightening. Sleepy and in my pjs,I went in search of our dog Monty, as I had a feeling he might be unsettled. But I couldn’t find him, and after searching, I found him in my tower at the top of the house. He must have been really frightened to end up there as normally he isn’t allowed up stairs. So together with my dog I started the first of the Perfect Storm series. I didn’t finish that painting for weeks, it is, as all paintings in this series are, an accumulation of many layers and deconstructed layers of paint. It’s an intense process when I start to deconstruct layers of painting as I never know if I will create something amazing or if I will just simply destroy what I have already created. The hardest part of deconstructing a painting is knowing when to stop and truthfully, I just have to go with my gut feeling, I just know when it’s finished and I have to make sure I do actually stop when I get that feeling. Thankfully due to the ever changing and volatile Irish climate, I think this series will just grow and grow!
